I’m a little embarrassed to admit this. I’ve seen this movie countless times over the years and it was just tonight that I made the connection of Otho saying that “people who commit suicide are civil servants in the afterlife” and that all the people working in the neitherworld have died by suicide.
I appreciate Michael Keaton more and more every viewing. Daniel Day-Lewis eat your heart out.

Sound of Metal 2019
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I suspect I’ll like this more as I reflect on it later. Sound design was so so good. As Marta Reeder pointed out, the silence shifts from anxiety inducing to calming over the course of the movie. I didn’t consciously notice this, but I think that speaks to the execution. As he accepted his new silence, we also accepted it.
It seems a lot of people interpreted this as a movie about grief. My takeaway was more about acceptance. Not acceptance…
