The Squid and the Whale 2005
I feel like I would have liked this a lot more if I had watched it before all the other indies I've seen, because so many of them derive from this new york-y, dysfunctional precocious vibe. That's probably why the blunt scenes and dialogue didn't feel that edgy to me. In the Mood for Love 2000
I liked all the things everyone else has mentioned: music, slow-mo, noodles. Favorite editing piece was going from Mr. Chow's cigarette-smoke-filled office to Mrs. Chan's office viewed from behind translucent gauzy curtains. At times it was mesmerizing. So many of the lighting choices were on point too. And, of course, the story and how it's told is the standout.
