  In trying to surprise longstanding franchise fans, this new series deliberately hides a vital point that massively impacts is accessibility to newer fans, to the point that it feels like false advertising. It isn’t even a twist, but an essential part of the series’ world-building. Mentioning it feels less like a spoiler and more a requirement to help people make an informed choice, but I’ll dance around it so I don’t have to tag this as a spoiler review.

  If “Maquia” was Mari Okada trying to make a more commercial film, then “Maboroshi” is her undiluted. Her trademark melodrama is put on notice with a story that has all the weird nuances that only she could write.

  I have always been a defender of the live-action “Sonic the Hedgehog” films, but this even exceeded my expectations. Drawing heavily on the Sonic Adventure 2 video game that was a standout memory from my childhood, I found myself at times beaming like an absolute idiot, and others wiping the tears welling up in my eyes. This film was a fun and heartfelt ride, anchored by a faithfulness to one of the franchise’s most iconic characters: Shadow the Hedgehog.
