Romeo + Juliet 1996
I’ve rarely seen such beautiful cinematic language on display as it is in this wild maximalist approach to Shakespeare. Regardless of what he’s done since, Baz deserves a ton of credit for having such a unique vision for this and going all in with every aspect. A movie that creates it’s own realm of existence so distant from anything else in it’s genre and yet, so of it’s time. I wouldn’t sacrifice anything about the dialogue but sure, if I completely understood everything they were saying I’d probably love it even more. That ending is everything.
