I feel like years from now this will be seen as Lanthimos most defining work (if not already).
Absurdity, dry dialogue, non existent human emotion and a grey color palette usually don’t do most movies any respective favor, but The Lobster says to hell with tradition, much like the films overarching message.
If Dune Part One was a preheating oven, Dune Part Two was a raging glass furnace. Many moments hit with such intensity and urgency that me (and the sold out theater I was in) were absolutely silent in shock. Absolutely brain melting brilliance. Denis Villeneuve has been a long time favorite of mine but it’s clear to me after watching this movie he may just be one of the greatest directors of our generation.
I really enjoyed the approach with this documentary. Sometimes being the fly on the wall for the duration of a documentary is more effective than having a cameraman or director who is constantly talking or asking questions and I felt like this doc allowed me to gain a lot of insight without having to spoon-feed it to me. Major props to the people that made this happen!
