Definitely the Coens’ most amateur work. All of the hallmarks that would later make them great at crafting black comedies, thrillers, and westerns are there in infantile stages, but at the same time the story was more than a little hard to follow, some of the characters were severely underdeveloped, and the non-McDormand performances were a bit of a mixed bag. The editing and production quality in a few spots as well was just flat out bad. Low-end Coen Brothers is still not unwatchable, or even unenjoyable, but at the same time this doesn’t hold a candle to their best works.

Doesn’t touch Bong Joon-Ho’s best work but the cast is great and there are some very funny parts in this!

All of the Eggers characteristics are there. The visuals, color grading, cinematography, and score are really top notch. Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe are great as well. So, despite this not hitting quite my over-the-moon expectations, this is still eminently enjoyable for me.

An animated dramady in which you experience a midlife crisis through the lens of the most unlikable man you’ve ever seen. Certainly not Kaufman’s best screenplay, but this still works on account of it having really unique and cool animation and some genuinely hilarious moments.
