First review on Letterboxd and I can’t think of anything more fitting than Jean Cocteau’s adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. I saw it when I was 14 and it was the movie that made me believe in magic and began my lifelong love affair with storytelling. Every frame is beautiful and Jean Marais is captivating in all three roles that he plays. Even 80-odd years after its release, this adaptation is timeless, warm, and relentlessly hopefully. All it asks of its audience is that you come to it with an open heart and maybe just a drop of childlike wonder.
