Honestly, I have very few words to actually ’review’ this film. Letterboxder Jake from 2019 would’ve written 1000 word essay on why this film should be hailed as a feat of filmmaking and special effects - but 2023 Jake appreciates that people have different tastes in film and how we perceive them. For me, though, this is up there in the category with Mad Max: Fury Road and The Dark Knight as just utterly exceptional action films.

I think I have a new top 5 film... I am left with the exact same feeling as when Sing Street or Vertigo first rolled their credits at me.

I have a particular soft spot from 'no plot, great characters, good vibes' films - and as I always mention with these films, in absence of plot must be interesting, well-developed characters. These are the people that guide us through the weird and wonderful things that happen throughout the films, and…

What’s the last good buddy movie that came out in cinemas? I can’t even remember but I finally got a hilarious hit of ridiculous comedy with One of Them Days.

This feels like a spiritual successor to Ice Cube’s Friday - two housemates are bummed out and need to get their rent money before the end of the day - the rest of the plot writes itself and is only enhanced by the stellar cast. Keke Palmer is an A-lister…

Enough has been said over centuries about Shakespeare to take any originality from this review, however The Tragedy of Macbeth feels like the perfect antidote to a spate of modernisations of the Bard’s work. Joel Coen has created a film that feels true to the text and cohesion of the play whilst still managing to be mostly original and different.

Washington and McDormand are perfectly cast and give stellar performances mulling over each word and intonation, however Alex Hassell, a…

This is perhaps the most I've ever been surprised by a film. The Letterboxd average rating of 2.2 and IMDb average of 5/10 gave me grave hopes, when in reality I had absolutely nothing to worry about.

Superman III is charming, funny and earnest in tone and direction. It also features one of the best scenes in the series so far - you know which one I'm talking about. Superman and comedy is not a typical collocation, but I was…

    Greenland

    ★★★★

As the next and most recent addition to my disaster movies I never saw list, Greenland follows a small family after the announcement of a planet killing comet, as we follow their perilous journey to safety.

The premise sounds very Hollywood - but for the most part the film plays as a drama set to the backdrop of a global apocalypse. I'm resisting the urge to be pernickety about a big budget thriller, because I really, really enjoyed Greenland. This…
