Nihilists? Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism dude, at least it’s an ethos.
Such an impressive cast can sometimes dilute the essential message in a film such as this one. However, Tom McCarthy’s ensemble deliver incredibly stoic and determined performances in service of the tone. The relentless pursuit for justice and a dialogue surrounding systemic child abuse in the Catholic Church leaves us hanging on every detail. Great, harrowing stuff.
This is immensely powerful. Through Bill, we witness instances of institutional abuse attributed to the legacy of the Magdalene Laundries. Murphy’s physical performance leaves us feeling hopeless, against the mafioso-style moral coercion administered against Irish women in convents.
Cillian Murphy? Best in the biz.
