Such a boring pretentious movie! what’s the point in it? That some lower middle class people will do anything to plot their way up the social scale? That the old privileged aristocracy are a bunch of funny naive eccentrics who will fall pray to any manipulative social climber? It’s all too outdated pre-French revolution nostalgia.
Nolan's fascination with obsessive haunted men looking to understand themselves reaches a peak here. Cillian Murphy's character seems to perfectly encapsulate Nolan's need to immerse and even overwhelm the viewer with his intellectual dilemmas and moral conflicts. And he does so brilliantly, inundating us with disturbing chilling images and deafening silences. Murphy's interpretation is intense and accomplished. He will probably get his Oscar, RDJ maybe too.
