The handheld digital video filming style is very jarring and off-putting it first. It almost feels more like a college student’s project than a movie.

But you settle in, Danny Huston hits his groove and it becomes incredibly fucking compelling.

The themes — mortality, excess, success, etc — aren’t novel but they’re presented in a way that really gets you involved in the plight of a man who seemingly has so much. I was a little taken aback by how…

God, Soderbergh has so much juice.

This is a crackling puzzlebox thriller that feels like modern-day Melville. It pulses with a frenetic jazzy score, oozes cool and has an airtight script.

The performances are great all the way around but Cate Blanchett and Marisa Abela absolutely own every scene they’re in and Fassbender is also pitch-perfect in his leading role. Pierce Brosnan too? Brother why the fuck not.

More movies like this please. A LOT more movies like this please.

Rock Hudson is, to quote another famous Hudson, absolutely magisterial as a successful man trying to vanish and just leave his life behind.

And he does so, but fails flatly in finding what he was looking for.

It turns out becoming another man entirely is less simple and less fulfilling than he thought it would be. It turns out that while you can literally leave your life behind, logistically it's not so simple. The face is different but the brain…
