An angry atheist’s movie. Feels flat and boring, hugely dependent on Hugh Grant’s great delivery of lines that equal the length of the bible.

  • The Substance

    The Substance

    ★★★

The Substance lacks meaningful substance. It’s perpetuating the very crime that the twisted beauty standard of the industry that the film is commenting on is committing—psychological provocation—in a violent and vulgar sense, unlike the latter that is focused on sexual lust. Recommend watching the film in the theater with someone that you dislike. Unforgettable, yes.

Ozu Yasujiro lives on in the modern cinema through the mind and interpretation of Wim Wenders. That should be exciting enough of a reason to watch this film on a big screen.

    Raw, vulgar, violent, and beautiful.
    Park’s peak artistry before Handmaiden.
Perhaps the most sophisticated and difficult he has made in his career, yet that makes it such a personal and ingenious film from Park.
A niche genre of vampires and almost B-class horror, but the Korean twist makes everything interesting and worth watching.
