Sweaty Mexican border noir stuffed with crooked cops and depravity. It rules.

A transfixing, enigmatic, but beautiful work about environmentalism vs commerce, peace vs turmoil, and “downstream” causality vs random tragedy. Hamaguchi stuffed this full of ideas, sometimes contradictory, whose depths feel a little imperceptible but certainly not absent. I’m gonna have to stew on this some more, and I’m not sure if it’s a GREAT film, but it is a thoroughly intentional and interesting piece of art by a GREAT filmmaker.
