A stark demonstration that dictatorships don’t always manifest as a cartoonish, iron-fist, comprehensive imposition on the lives of citizens, but often seep in and out of them amidst their joys and mundanities. On the other hand, it also demonstrates that no tyrant, despite best efforts, has ever broken the spirit of a people. We will smile.

    Also, Fernanda Torres is majestic.

I’m struggling with what to say, since while I would describe this movie as kinda boring (it took a few sittings to watch), I’m finding its powerful moments and compelling performances really lingering with me. It doesn’t grab you and throw you in at any point, but it does gently and steadily lead you through the entirety of its length. I’d be so at peace with Adrien Brody winning best actor for this tomorrow.

Not a movie I would’ve seen if not for my friends, but I’m glad I did! :)

The first act was awesome, second act was a little messy, and the casting choice for the Wizard was a little confusing, so uncharismatic 😭. Ariana was soooo funny tho and it was impressive how natural she sounded singing outside of her usual genre.

I most enjoyed, though, the poignant political subtext and the stunning visuals. Can’t say the same for the audio though - those speakers were on their last legs. Get it together landmark 😭

Awesome premise, score, screenplay, and suspense.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, since I came primarily for Zendaya and the gay shit and I don’t give a single fuck about tennis, but, of course, this isn’t really a movie about tennis. Tennis as a medium for control, status, the erotic, and one’s personal sense of worth and purpose was portrayed masterfully and in a way that taps into something deeply primal for the audience.

    I hadn’t seen a five-er in a long time - damn that felt good!
