  Once Upon a Time in the West 1968

  I really need to seek out more Jason Robards roles, because here he’s key in elevating Cheyenne from “character in the Tuco slot” to the heart of the film. In a way I can’t quite put into words, he brings a certain warmth to the household/community scenes that’s absolutely essential to making them work.

  Relatively tame for a Cronenberg picture, with great emphasis on “Relatively.” The special effects are still great, just few and far between.

  The best part about being a giallo fan is discovering how much love professional filmmakers have for it too.

  “What does it mean, ‘Faith’?”
  “Only one man had it.”

  On every level, this is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. I’m deeply moved, even though I’m still untangling all my thoughts. Suffice to say, for now, that this is a significant display of humanity’s internal, yet perhaps universal, contradictions. I haven’t seen a film noir remotely like it, with the sole exception of The Night of the Hunter.
