I have a lot of thoughts on this as someone who was raised in the Catholic Church and attended 14 years of Catholic school.
First off, I loved this. A gripping meditation on the intersection of tradition and progress, Conclave is a masterful exploration of the Catholic Church’s struggle with modernity. Through a tightly wound narrative, the film delves into the intense, often conflicting forces at play within the conclave, where the future of the Church is decided. What stands…

I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. Love a good courtroom drama. I do believe this biopic may have been better suited as a Dreyfus biopic rather than Zola. But the acting was decent, Muni and Schildkraut especially, for a film at this time, and the story outlined rather well.
"I got a document that says Dreyfus is guilty but you can't see it but it's real bad for Dreyfus I swear please mr. jury believe me"
was the french army really this dumb

Supposedly the film was "not a popular choice for Best Picture among members of the press, who felt that voters had been brainwashed by its lush gaudiness" and I'm inclined to agree. While The Great Ziegfeld has some truly incredible set and costume design, it drastically suffers from a subpar story and poor acting. That, combined with an agonzing over three hour run time, makes this one of the worst best picture winners.
At the time of watching, I have this slightly above Cimarron; slightly below Cavalcade.

I think i've seen everyone in this as an NPC in Red Dead Redemption 2
Yeah this one is a slog. Likely unfortunate just for the times, but the audio is horrible and as a result, the dialogue is difficult to understand. The story did also not age well. Some rather misgynistic, racist, and anti-native verbiage in most of the film.
Best line is "don't let that pussy in black tights steal your claim!"
My cat liked the horses on screen though. And the random Teddy Roosevelt cameo was great.

It's hard not to watch this and think every 10 minutes: how the hell did they film that in 1927?? Admittedly, this is only the second feature-length silent film I've seen, but this was a great one for the medium. I can only imagine how incredible this was to view in a theater in the 20s. Solid film of friendship, love, and the (probably satirized at times) realities of war.
As a cinema…
