Mescal and Corio have fantastic chemistry in this film.

    I should hug my parents.

I have a lot of thoughts on this as someone who was raised in the Catholic Church and attended 14 years of Catholic school.

First off, I loved this. A gripping meditation on the intersection of tradition and progress, Conclave is a masterful exploration of the Catholic Church’s struggle with modernity. Through a tightly wound narrative, the film delves into the intense, often conflicting forces at play within the conclave, where the future of the Church is decided. What stands…

You had to figure at least a few of the best picture winners in the 1940s would be about WWII. I definitely enjoyed Mrs. Miniver. It survives as a first person experience of upper class Brits during the war.

Reading a bit behind the scenes of the film, I found it funny that Helmut Dantine, who plays the German flyer, was only cast as Nazis in films of the 40s, despite being American. Typecasting is eternal.

Napoleon the cat existing adds a half star to my review. CUTIE

A story of true struggles experienced by so many countries in the early 20th century. This instance are poor families in a coal mining town in Wales. It's easy to see how leftist ideas spread so successfully at the time. Rights for the poor!

Some brilliant shots and directing in this film. One that stands out to me is when Huw first goes in the mine and the camera is placed on the mine cart for a tracking shot. Gorgeous.

Also maybe we just kill the teacher Mr. Jonas

I think i've seen everyone in this as an NPC in Red Dead Redemption 2

Yeah this one is a slog. Likely unfortunate just for the times, but the audio is horrible and as a result, the dialogue is difficult to understand. The story did also not age well. Some rather misgynistic, racist, and anti-native verbiage in most of the film.

Best line is "don't let that pussy in black tights steal your claim!"

My cat liked the horses on screen though. And the random Teddy Roosevelt cameo was great.

Watching Every Oscar Best Picture Winner: 1/97

It's hard not to watch this and think every 10 minutes: how the hell did they film that in 1927?? Admittedly, this is only the second feature-length silent film I've seen, but this was a great one for the medium. I can only imagine how incredible this was to view in a theater in the 20s. Solid film of friendship, love, and the (probably satirized at times) realities of war.

    As a cinema…
