Nowhere near the originals—and certainly not helping itself by reprising a classic villain—but still has plenty of charms and great animation.
Frustrating but still pretty powerful. Strong first half (or so) with nightmarish, jarring images gives way to a lot of repetitive exposition and explaining the themes to the audience. Not really sure that the combination of modern feminist themes, grafted onto a century old puritanical narrative, fully works. Still, a lot of this was really enjoyable, even if it didn’t fully work.
While the character driven beats feel a little underserved, the sheer scale of this film is astonishing. The battle scenes are some of the best put to film. The inventive cinematography of Anatoly Petritsky is a constant delight. Somehow, at 7 hours long (across 4 parts), it manages to feel too short for its own good.
