Ming-liang created something terrifying in Hsiao. A wayward youth seemingly turned into a wrathful deity - Hsiao’s haunting of Ah Kuei is among the more unique character dynamics I’ve seen on screen.
The simple act of rebellion by Ah Kuei Against Hsiao’s domineering father opens a pandora’s box, awakening a force within Hsiao that can’t be quelled. Unfortunately, Hsiao’s rebel hero doesn’t seem interested in friendship - turning Hsiao into something of a monster.
It’s disturbing to watch Hsiao enact terror upon Ah Kuei, punishing him unjustifiably and without remorse. He follows his every movement, observing and judging Ah Kuei’s actions.
