📽️Screening at Cameo💫

I liked it more than I anticipated to after reading other Letterboxd reviews, and Q&A with the director and producer after the screening cleared up most questions I had about representation choices etc

Some artificialities around use of tech in the film, like choosing a handle that reads just @max or @sebastian, or not having a digital bank card were hilarious

All in all, made me interested in seeing more movies about sex work for sure

100% overhyped. Last 25 minutes are actually decent
Everything up to that point—unnecessarily tiresomely paced and extremely uninteresting
Important addition to basic New York New Year drama movies collection in terms of diverse population representation, I guess

Seemed “duller than I remember” at first, but the relationship between Jim and Silver is explored so richly and meaningfully it makes the whole film a beautiful and touching experience 🌌
One of the few that have a non-romantic main line with, in fact, zero love interests for the main character - also very refreshing!
Great adaptation, simple but profound
And the visuals are sublime

Top tier female* rage on the borderline between post and meta

Correct me if I’m wrong but the only femme* vocals soundtrack is bashed in the subtitles/last scene (genius move if so)

Should be understood through recognition by anyone who was raped or SAd in/by the postmodern patriarchal era

Theatrical, appalling appealingly, skilfully thrilling

A little simplified towards the end

A proper example of use of cinematic language as a language of phantasy that exists as a borderline tension between possible and metaphorical

Questionable if taken as a piece that could be interpreted through a social agenda lens

A truly fascinating piece of cinema. Need a cis guy to mansplain it to me.

Notes for self:
- went out with a bloke like this once: fucks like a machine (in both the good and the bad ways of it), the void is at times palpable, does feel like could actually kill you
- I might give everything with Willem Dafoe an additional star now, the first meeting/cross-examination scene with Detective Kimball was sublime
- !!written and directed by…

It was good, but less than I expected from it, unfortunately :(

Cool costumes, music, and characters. Interesting setting and setup. Everyone is hot.
A lot of captivating dynamics and stories, but just seems like there is too much of everything, so nothing is particularly explored in depth and the ending before the credits feels rushed.
Maybe could do cool as a show.

It’s a perfectly weird movie with again amazing acting, very noir, very charismatic, and a good balance of fucked up, a little silly with some namings but cinematography honestly made me not even notice that
Camera work is fantastic, Mickey Rourke is just a star, and Charlotte Rampling and Lisa Bonet are gracious and captivating in such polar but both mesmerising ways
Watching it now, I have more questions around how appropriate black representation here is which I haven’t thought about some seven years ago, but I’m genuinely not sure I am capable to assess it
Perverse christian lore strikes again!
