I really want to like it more, but I just have too many problems with it.
The acting is hit and miss. Some great performances and some pretty bad ones. Robert Pattinson and Toni Collette backpack the majority of the cast in every scene they’re in.
The structure just confuses me. Potential subplots dropped as fast as they were introduced, lots of over explaining, and a weirdly long narrated intro.

The anti-climactic-ness is obviously intentional, but I don’t want to give more credit than is due. Some scenes feel very intentional in their frustrating choices, while others there seems to be no reason to include. This film wants to frustrate the fans, depriving them of that twisted sense of catharsis that many experienced in the first film. It’s a very bold and hilarious choice. But at times it’s maybe doubling down a bit too much, making for a tedious watch.…

Paul can’t travel south because it will fulfill his horrific visions, but he must travel south if he’s to “see,” with the water of life, if there is chance to circumvent these visions. It’s paradoxical, and a perfect summation of Paul’s entire character.
Ultimately, he decides the costs of his visions are worth the fulfillment of his own goals, which would be indisputably evil if we didn’t also know that Paul has been trapped into this fate from the beginning.…
