Despite its scenes of intentional exposition, the film manages to create a very solid and believable universe. It's very sordid and daring in its scenes of gore and violence. At some point, it slows down from its incredible beginning, but the tension remains.
I was expecting a low-budget action movie, but this was much more. The composition of the first scene, without any dialogue, is actually very good, and despite the action scenes, this is more of a film about the relationship between an assassin and a boy he's training to become, all in an internal struggle.
It's definitely not Eggers' best film, but the production design, its respect for the original work, and Lily-Rose Depp's incredible performance manage to give the universe constructed within the film a great deal of realism and credibility. The changes in Orlok's appearance fade into the background, as just listening to his voice reveals the macabre nature of the character. The photographic use of silhouettes and shadows makes reaching the final shot a visual delight.
