Summer with Monika 1953
My least favorite Bergman film this far. But for the one iconic close-up shot of her face, Monica remains such a one dimsnional character, it’s hard to believe she was created by the man who made Persona. The portrayal of her as the whore in Bergman’s personal whore-Madonna complex is neither shocking nor especially interesting. Still, the movie is beautifully shot, a pleasure on the eye, which is why I still got some enjoyment from watching it.
