I'm Still Here 2024
Reminded me so much of my mom that it hurt. Cried a lot thinking about that. The mother daughter relationships, and the sister relationships resonated deeply. Fernanda Torres truly gives a fierce performance. Searching for the person you love so deeply while desperately trying to hold together a family that is so important to you is so difficult to imagine, and a lived experience of so many. An honest portrayal of systemic violence and corruption.
Reminiscent of Roma. I tried to imagine this film also from Zezé’s point of view.

Sing Sing 2023
Pursuing joy and creative expression in the most hopeless of situations is brave, deeply beautiful, + resilient. Always a worthy endeavor. And I have so much respect and awe for those in this film who embarked on that journey. My second watch of Sing Sing was even more emotional than my first. A film truly unlike any other. Art is so wonderful.

That first scene captivated me, and then slowly, I found myself going a little crazy getting more and more stuck in the confusing and messy and ugly reality of this family. A lot of mundanity, with undertones of many more dark and depressing themes. Racism, alcoholism, infidelity, fear, loneliness, depravity etc. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s like a one glimpse into a woven tapestry of a family. Wow. One of those experiences where words do nothing to describe it. My mouth was just fully hanging open the entire time. Insanely mind boggling to look at. I loved the journey, adventure, unknown of it all. The emotion and heart. The suspense and thrill. Eyes were glued. Multiple times I cried. Multiple times I laughed. So cool to watch this truly knowing nothing going in even though it’s been out for 10 years.
