incredible ingenious action sequences. The “plot” - eh - but a fun summer movie.
More of a 3.5 - the later sections of the movie feel a little misconceived - but it was so fun to see in theaters.
Gorgeous, sensitive voice work by Vicky Krieps, Mathieu Amalric, Charlotte Rampling who interpret Charlotte Salomon’s text - a multimedia work that at times feels like a libretto, a storyboard and a graphic novel - about her family history and her own development as a young woman and an artist before her eventual capture by Nazis and murder at Auschwitz. hundreds of Salomon’s autobiographical paintings animate this work which manages to combine documentary and dramatic techniques to create a portrait of an artist clinging to life, finding a voice and living through her art during the most terrible circumstances.
My first movie of the year - a deeply New York story for people who care about words, writing, publishing, but more importantly about two passionately industrious lives, meaningfully spent. The full house applauded at the end.
