Hey, there’s gotta be a star for each of Candy, Holly, and Jackie. You’re probably going to watch this movie to see them, and it’s worth it for that! They are mesmerizing and funny, even in scenes that go on a bit too long. If you’re not watching it for them, maybe you’re watching it for the chance to see the flaccid penises of various weird mumbling guys. Which I guess is okay too!
I watched this the night it came out with another trans person and had to go for a long walk after to talk about it. Within a week, I’d seen it two more times, because I kept feeling like it would be a little irresponsible to encourage a trans friend to go alone and like I was going to be annoyed with my cis friend if she saw it without me. Anyway. Vibes, music, aesthetics, lighting, rad monologue… all that on top of intense feelings.
This is my favorite movie. I grew up watching It’s a Wonderful Life as a kid, and there are elements of that here, but it’s more like “what if a mom actually WAS alive” than “what if some nice guy was never alive”. I was a newly single mom (who also happened to be trans, although there are no trans characters in this movie, it’s worth mentioning) when I first saw this movie. I don’t want to give too much…
