Regardless of the controversy, I don’t think the movie did a great job at demonstrating “why they stay”. It’s missing the entire emotional connection between Ryle and Lilly because there was zero dialogue and just a montage of activities that was crucial in understanding why she endured his behaviors and how someone could forgive him.
