I did really enjoy watching this but the storyline couldn’t keep up with the actors. Nicholas cage gave a breathtaking performance that was overshadowed by plot twists that we’ve seen before. This felt like a condensed, less emotive sharp objects dupe, with a lot of missed opportunity….i really wanted to think about this movie for days but i think an unnerving watch is all it has to offer.
People love to ask me what my favorite true crime docs are and in the sea of films I’ve explored it’s hard to compare them, but this is a good one for the books. Filmed very similarly to the staircase, this documentary is not told with a trustworthy narrator causing the viewer to flip flop on what they believe multiple times. This to me, is the greatest way to show the vastness of a case and truly allow us to draw our own conclusions not only about the truth, but about what evidence is necessary to convict and how the justice department should operate. Captivating!
TW SEXUAL ABUSE
the entire documentary is about sexual abuse so know that— anyways this is EXACTLY what I look for out of a documentary like this. PURE TESTIMONY, no narrative being pushed, minimal production... i mean oh my god the DRAMA in this family is... amazing...also heartbreaking, of course, and I think films like this truly capture the scope of the damage and violence for victims of childhood sexual abuse, from adulthood alcoholism to continued abuse over generations.
