Stumbled upon this movie while going through Irene Papas' filmography. I had no sense for it going in, but now I feel like I need to watch more of Michael Cacoyannis' work, because this was breathtaking. Easily one of the best adaptations of Greek mythology I've ever seen, with some wonderful acting, especially from Irene Papas and Tatiana Papamoschou, who plays the title character. It was slow at first, but that last hour more than made up for it.

this movie feels overhated. I know people have this instinctual desire to hate all remakes, but Coppola’a style is exactly what this story needed, and vice versa. I feel like this has more narrative than her usual films and her artful cinematography and directing makes the suspenseful moments even sharper. Like that ending scene!? actual chills. there were def some slow moments that I could’ve done without, but still great.
