Funny, authentic, and charmingly weird. This is the Coen brothers at some of their best, presenting a dark comedy that is as absurdist as it is painfully believable. A fascinating examination of the Jewish American experience, which asks you questions but withholds the answers - but that isn't to say that A Serious Man is convoluted or doesn't make sense. Rather, it encourages you to stop looking for answers - it's okay to have questions unanswered, and that'll most certainly be the case once you finish A Serious Man.

The film drags on for a solid 2 hours longer than it needs to, without the character development or plot complexity to justify it. Each twist is met only with disappointment, as where the film feels to be wrapping up multiple times throughout its runtime it refuses to build up into a climactic moment and bores its viewers with monotonous pacing and energy.

Spike Lee what a legend - at times shockingly blunt in its narrative but by all means that is a pleasant surprise. The film truly legitimizes the long standing impacts of loss and trauma, in a way that few other films about the Vietnam War have really captured. The film holds nothing back in its critiques, and rightly so. Spike Lee doesn't leave you guessing at his broader message, something I really appreciated in tackling this subject - his truth is never obscured by style or technique, but rather he tells his facts bluntly and through distinct stylistic choices that never distract from his message.
