    There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood tells the riveting story of a father that stops at nothing to provide his son the life he deserves. This narrative initiates a clear artistic dialogue with "The Pursuit of Happyness," released a year prior, in which Will Smith plays a modern interpretation of the rough-and-tumble Daniel Plainview. The 2006 film ends with the loving father figure on the cusp of success after years of toil, full of optimism. Despite these undeniable thematic and narrative parallels,…

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

    ★★★½

Kinda hard to judge, the extended edition has like 2 straight hours of pure spectacle that are pretty difficult to argue with, though can’t say I got much more than that during the rewatch.

The series’ broader narrative remains interesting, especially compared to the Marvel drivel of today, for which this is a clear prototype. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

All about the fear and uncertainty of an inevitable march to war. Faramir, the one character to actually express some genuine anti-war sentiment, is shown to be kind of a pussy that everyone hates. Otherwise our heroes decide they must summon their inner courage in the face of a unambiguously evil adversary, an attitude that the US populous bravely manifested when we invaded Iraq three months after this movie’s release. Also I keep calling it “The Twin Towers” on accident.

I watched this on new years' eve a few years ago, stoned and practically unblinking, transfixed for the entire 163 min runtime. since then I've heard pretty convincing arguments, which I can't actually relate to my own experience watching the film, that it really blows. whatever. i will never watch this movie again and let the apparently redundant and shoddy storytelling, essentialized in my memory as pure sound and vision, remain a stone-cold classic, 10-out-of-10 gem forever
