Reflections of Evil 2002
I’m not easily flabberghasted anymore, but guess what.
This outsider art paints a clearer picture on what the United States today seems to be: a frightening bunch of overweight, mentally ill people selling useless knick-knacks, about to explode to any passers-by’s face on the side of endless roads. Blaming chemtrails and hurting itself in its confusion, and actually died of sugar overdose in the E.T.’s wild ride in 1994. The sound design in particular is totally brutal.

”Look what we’ve become! We’re losers! We’re not winners!”
Coppola and Scorsese lure you in with the fun and glamour of mob life before showing the downside. But DePalma is more bitter and real. Any good times Tony Montana may have go by in a flashy montage that also constantly moves pieces toward his downfall. Mostly he’s angry, bitter and paranoid, driving away anyone unlucky enough to get close to him. The model capitalist of the 80s.
This is probably DePalma’s most popular work but especially Americans don’t tend to get what he’s saying about America.

Kuosmanen: ”Kun katson tätä elokuvaa, en toivo että he saisivat toisensa, vaan ajattelen että kunpa he näkisivät olevansa toistensa kanssa samanlaisia, jotteivät he olisi enää niin yksinäisiä.”
