Autumn Sonata 1978
The dialogue can be thought-provoking and memorable, and there are some cleverly constructed shots here and there, but this movie honestly triggered no emotion in me. The dialogue is non-stop and infuriatingly monotone, which speaks for the most over-arching issue I have: the pacing is AWFUL. No breaks, ups or downs, nothing. A straight line of monotone dialogue for the entire movie.

This is a difficult film to dive into, and upon re-watch I’ve garnerned a much higher respect for it. There’s a lot of interwoven topics here, the main ones being aging, creativity, and the hardships of being an artist in a dull and “iron” world. The film tackles all of these topics with a depressive and pessimistic outlook, emphasized with dull, dark colors, grey skies, and haunting cinematography revolving around beautiful and stale landscapes…
