The first half of the film was compelling and well-written. However, once they opened the belief door everything started to become muddled and convoluted. Great performances all around but I felt disappointed by the ending.

Why was Jesse Eisenberg's shirt buttoned like that? Overall, I enjoyed the film but it felt like something was missing. There were moments that appeared to jumpstart into something more but then were quickly stunted and redirected into something mundane. While that probably was Eisenberg's intent, I'm not sure it worked as well as he hoped. I prefer a movie that is a bit more intentional with what it's trying to get across. My brother! I love how raw and realistic this movie felt. From its camera work to its mundane dialogue, the audience is merely a fly on the wall. Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels are great as always, creating palpable tension for us. Squid doesn't shy away from discomfort and it doesn't have a moral or self righteous agenda, it just is. That's what makes it one of the better "divorce" films I've seen. Right up there with Kramer vs Kramer.
