Late Spring 1949
For a film almost entirely composed of static shots and whose plot centers around the maintenance of tradition, it is also very much a tragic depiction of different types of movement. Kinda crazy how some of these cutaways/“pillow shots” to trees and rocks made me cry.

Aftersun 2022
I just sat there for a minute after the credits finished rolling.
I don’t think any other movie I’ve watched this year has used the medium of film itself so adventurously. The way Aftersun plays with time and perception made for a refreshingly creative experience. Much is left unsaid, but the small snapshots of video recordings and memories we are allowed to witness disclose multitudes. Of course, Aftersun isn’t merely a meta-textual exercise; it is first and foremost a profoundly introspective and intensely moving film. Definitely among my favorites of 2022
