  This movie gets very close to a Pynchon-esque comedy thriller but keeps getting derailed with the almost-separate romantic comedy b-plot. Wish the two sides of the story were better mixed or combined. But otherwise, the storytelling is very good, and performances are great. And obviously lots of fantastic stunts.

  The story is not especially fresh: Kid accidentally leads intruders to his home, his family and friends are kidnapped, he has to rescue them, and he gains companions on his journey.

  I have to confess that I'm not that familiar with the earlier movies in this version of Planet of the Apes, but I don't think anyone could say that this adds much to the ideas in the series.

  Interesting special effects efforts, but pretty much what you'd expect of the time. Good performances, maybe not an extraordinary take on the story.
