Maybe it's just that after ~10 rewatches of this, most of which occurred in the heady days of high school where this was always on cable TV, I've become too inured to its pleasures. Cool things (like the "Battle of Carthage" scene) always atone for silly things. But as I get older, the silliness quotient (particularly some of the plot beats) begins to exceed the coolness quotient, and points of this rewatch were particularly tough.

Oppenheimer 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
For a movie that (mostly) had respect for the viewer’s intelligence throughout, the John F. Kennedy name drop was so jarringly stupid for about 4 different reasons, not least of which was that Strauss even then would obviously know who JFK was.
But man, the Trinity sequence and Oppenheimer’s vision-plagued speech afterward, Nolan’s best work by a mile. Overall the effect succeeds and the usual Nolan excesses/heavy-handedness are forgiven.
Great performances in small parts by Matthew Modine, David Krumholtz(!), and Josh Hartnett(!!).
