I had to watch this twice to really make something out of it, but after analyzing it more closely I think it's poking fun at capitalist and corrupt churches and independent religious practice. While the church was selling merch and prospering off of offerings/donations another man was living and poverty and robs people. Going into this movie I didn't know what to expect. With the opening jumping into the unusual artwork of Christine and Richard burning his hand in a far and unaffectionate home, I didn't imagine the romance that would spark between them.
