A real midlife crisis of a film. Viagral shall we say? It is obviously intended to be a navy ad as well as a romping dad-flick, but it's impossible not to read Cruise's man-raging-against-the-dying-of-the-light as a personification of national anxieties about imperial decline. It's an oddly reflective posture for a film like this to adopt.

I rewatched this recently in a tiny (~20 seat) cinema in Berlin. I remembered it being a much stronger film. The first half is rather poetic and beautiful and there are sublime moments, like the transitions to colour in the circus. But there is a marked drop off in quality from about the point at which Damiel becomes mortal. The film really could have ended satisfyingly shortly after he is bonked on the head with the suit of armour and…
