That’s a line from Dir. David Bruckner’s fantastic ‘Amatuer Night’ short film in the anthology flick V/H/S . It also doubles up as my opinion on The Night House. Fortunately for me, I did not get torn to pieces by a succubus unlike the characters in the aforementioned scarefest. There was however a particularly annoying dude behind me in the cinema who kept mumbling during the final act of the film, so I guess we can’t have it all…
Some films choose to radically switch their direction or even genre at around the halfway point. The Empty Man does this on about 4-5 occasions throughout its runtime.
That's not to say The Empty Man is an anthology. Rather, one cohesive thread is neatly woven throughout the various explorations of Horror sub-genres. I definitely interpret this as a strength overall, though I can see why others would find the tonal and narrative shifts rather immersion-breaking. To give an example, the…
