I was expecting ‘Anora’ to be one of the best movies of the year (Sean Baker doesn’t miss), but I wasn’t expecting it to also be the funniest.
The acting was predictably naturalistic and raw (although I question whether Mark Eidelshtein has ever played a videogame before). Baker is a master of getting such performances from his actors and Mikey Madison will deservedly be a front-runner in the best-actress race. Top to bottom, another incredible outing from one of the most exciting filmmakers doing it.
Yorgos is back in his enigmatic, hyper-surreal bag in this 3-part anthology about sex, death and devotion. Describing a Yorgos film as “weird” is pointless because that’s the baseline. But ‘Kinds of Kindness’ is challenging, and dense, and disarming in a way that is sure to turn most casual movie-goers off. This isn’t ‘Poor Things’, it’s deep cut Yorgos for all the morbidly curious weirdos who love art house. The cast is amazing and all are willing to go there…
Martin McDonagh continues his streak of heartbreakingly hilarious dark dramedy. Subtle, nuanced performances from the entire cast punctuate the brilliant writing and gorgeous cinematography. Some might be put off by the grim ambiguity of the premise/story. But I enjoyed escaping into this bleak, quirky slice of Ireland.
I laughed a lot. It made me think. It’s a continuation of a very strong string of choices for Nic Cage and Michael Cera elevates everything he’s in.
But, for some reason that I can’t fully articulate, I left the theater slightly disappointed. Maybe it was overhype, but the film never really hit the heights I was hoping for.
My opinion might change after a rewatch.
