The Lost Daughter 2021
Thought I would love this but outside of the actressing (this is the first time I liked Dakota Johnson in anything) I was disappointed. As a character study, it's just okay. As a thriller, it has its moments. As an examination of motherhood, it's...limited. The main character is an enormously privileged woman and I don't think the film does much to interrogate that, considering it affects what she can get away with as a "bad mother." Maybe something was lost in translation from book to screen.

Dull, repetitive, misogynistic, needlessly long, and above all, pointless. The whole "becoming the monster" arc feels hollow because the main character is barely explored before he embarks on his rampage of revenge. Both he and the killer have little going on when it comes to character psychology. As a result the tension in their cat-and-mouse game derives solely from the depravity of the acts (which the film takes care to wallow in), rather than from anything specific to their relationship.…
