I feel like this film isn’t saying anything that Hayao Miyazaki hadn’t said in his previous movie (Nausicaä) and almost feels directionless at points. The journey of the two main characters can be fun at times, but the main message being: ‘wanting power is bad’ almost directly parrots what Nausicaä said without any of the environmental messages and it lacks much payoff in the climax of the film in comparison to Nausicaä.
It’s a funish journey that was enjoyable but not worth a rewatch
A movie that may be enjoyed by kids or fans exclusively looking for references, but offers little substance otherwise.
This film’s predecessor was a fantastic origin for the character of Miles and possessed breathtaking visuals adjacent to that of a comic book.
This film keeps in touch with those visuals, expanding on the creative liberty that comes with the different visual styles of other dimensions.
