Joan the Maid I: The Battles 1994
Adored the realism and the documentary-esque style. Apparent budget constraints aside, the sacrosanctity of Joan’s zealous life is relayed quietly, in mostly interior shots limited to a few characters; the movie often blurs the line between grounded theater and dramatized film. It’s unfortunate that this movie will be initially disavowed by some for its lack of truly bloody violence (you’d assume with a title like “the battles,” there would be a fulfilling amount of action, but the title is definitely more internal than external). Nonetheless, Les Batailles is a great reminder, narratively and composition-wise, that there is divinity in banality.
