This one is oozing vibes of a filmmaker who’s trying to compensate a lack of authenticity with work ethic. Technically spot on, superficially deep. The protagonist checks all the boxes of the writers idea of how a traumatized modern person supposedly looks: a poly-detached, ego-maniac, “i like older man” birthday-hater. Edgy! Contemporary film is the dead.
Oh what a curious endeavor „Sherman‘s March“ is. The anachronistically long runtime seems grossly unnecessary at first. But come the one hour mark you‘ll find that the director, narrator, cameraman, editor and lousy boom operator is chasing something beyond the medium film (despite his identification through it). In his complete avoidance of developing a plot or any kind of narrative structure Ross McElwee created some truly inspiring and humbling contemplation on life. How a portrayal of a Union General becomes the search for love.
Turns out that witty 17th century banter in exaggerated costumes is all I ever wanted.
