If all of Certain Women were an extended version of the story that features Lily Gladstone, it would probably be a great film. Gladstone delivers an outstanding subtle performance of loneliness and longing. Gladstone, her character's story, and the understated direction of the film have a powerful synergy. The other two leads (Laura Dern and Michelle Williams) are also good, but their sections of the film are much less impactful.

The Night of the Hunter 1955
The Night of the Hunter has a good amount of things working against its outstanding cinematography. Bad child actors who are central to the plot. A villain who is pure evil in such a blatant and occasionally goofy way that it makes parts of the plot nonsensical. Jarring tonal shifts that do not work well. The film is full of beautiful shadowy compositions though - the underwater scene is incredible.

White Material 2009
A direct yet measured portrait of colonial arrogance, denial, and decay. Beautifully shot with a strong score that enhances the ominous mood. Isabelle Huppert is excellent.
