The jokes about Japanese culture felt a bit uncomfortable at first, but it all made sense as soon as I realized that their "loss in translation" in a completely foreign environment made them feel connected to each other. They are the two people who are of different times, both perfect for each other yet mutually unhappy. They met, they understood each other, and they knew it would never work out.
Also, deep down, I truly enjoyed the moody scenes of Charlotte sitting by the window. They were a fine portrayal of the existential crisis of a person in a foreign place.
