I had a great time watching this, but it never truly grabbed me.
It was super political with Mark Ruffalo doing his best Trump impression, a disregard for life, along with a Stephen Miller stand-in and the whole set-up feeling very post 2024 if Trump had lost and left earth with his cult of followers.
Robert Pattinson was incredible as Mickey though. His performance and the sci-fi nature and creatures were the main draws for me. The rest fell a bit flat.
I can see why people love it—it’d be right up my alley if not for the body horror aspects, just couldn’t do it.
It’s a visual poem and not much else. But Coppola is truly a master at the visual arts. Could I tell you what was happening and why? Probably not. But I was thoroughly entertained through the entire (long) movie and found it stunningly beautiful.
Seems to be a bit hit or miss for people, but I really enjoyed this. The blending of real world issues and the over-the-top portrayal in the fictional world really worked for me. It's no The Big Short, but I enjoyed it so much more than Vice.
