    Thor: Ragnarok

    ★★★★★

Ragnarok is a massive step up from the previous two iterations, finally giving Thor some real personality and depth. It’s fun and silly in all the right places without losing focus or forcing cheap jokes. Hela is a fantastic villain, the Grandmaster is pure gold and Korg’s one liners are great. Loki isn’t as much of a standout this time, but he’s still excellent. Just an all-around great time - I love it.

Black Panther delivers a fantastic story with Wakanda as a beautifully realised wonderland. Killmonger stands out as one of Marvel’s best villains - his motives are compelling and you find yourself rooting for him. Shuri too is a fun character. The first two acts are strong, but the final battle devolves into a weird CGI light show. Plus, it’s frustrating how Marvel keeps wasting great villains by killing them off too soon.

What are those? Why do you have your toes out in my lab?

The training wheels protocol sequence is a good fun, and tying the Vulture’s origins to the Battle of NY is a smart way to ground him in the MCU. That said, the final battle feels a bit underwhelming compared to the rest of the film. Tony Stark is back to his best - obnoxious yet undeniably caring.

If you’re nothing without this suit, then you shouldn’t have it.

    Ant-Man

A fun and lighthearted origin story that keeps it simple - almost too simple - making it predictable. The plot is ridiculous but full of laughs, and while the villain is pretty weak, at least we get a giant Thomas the Tank Engine out of it. It takes a bit to find its groove, but once it does, it’s entertaining and you can’t ask for more than that. The ants are surprisingly cool but Luis steals the show - he’s…
