I really enjoyed how Howard almost comically rushes from making one bad decision to another. Not even thinking before placing bets or punching The Weekend.
The fast cuts, shaky camera and overlapping dialogue truly made you feel like you’re inside Howard’s head when he’s making those decisions. Feeling the rush and stress of his high stake bets. And how he must be always thinking about the other people involved in his web of lies.

The film California split illustrates how gambling finds its place in the middle of society. Although the plot left me kind of clueless about what story the movie wanted to tell it at least gave us some interesting characters. The performance of Elliott Gould and George Segal is what made the film watch worthy, their friendship and fun they engage in while gambling is just infectious.

The Gambler (1974) portrays gambling addiction in a way I’ve never seen before. This movie heavily focuses on the reason for addiction and how gambling feels to an addict. It is made clear that addiction is not bound to a specific game of, for example poker, but a way to escape reality. Axel Freed is on the heist for a rush.
